Chapter 25

Raven

It had been a long time since I’d seen a game this intense. I bit my nails in between cheers, and Wolf pawed inside me. I was sure half our team would be black and blue tomorrow.

The halftime buzzer went off, and I moved to the side as the dance squad took the floor. I cracked the lid on my water and took a long pull before capping it and putting it back on the floor. I started to move closer to the other girls, but Skylar broke in.

“Mm-mm.” She shook her head. “Don’t think you’re welcome here just because you’ve got the same uniform on as the rest of us. You don’t bleed the same color. We don’t rat out our friends.”

Something snapped, sending the docile girl I typically was deep into hiding. Wolf stood to her full height inside me. I’d had enough. I was tired of being accused of something I didn’t do. “Skylar. You are full of crap. I didn’t say anything to anyone. And I’d bet everything in my bank account you were the one who started the rumor that I did. That makes you a liar and the one who ratted out a team member. You can shove it.”

No one moved for a full minute as the dancers continued in the background. Mouths gaped while Skylar’s teeth gleamed as her lips pulled back into something ugly.

“You are a pathetic tagalong who got her best friend kicked off the team. You think you’re something. I am the cheer captain. You will never be better than me.”

I snorted. “I don’t care if you’re the cheer captain. It doesn’t give you an excuse to treat people like dirt. I don’t know what I did to make you dislike me, but either tell me or get over it. Because I’m done with this.” My hands were on my hips, my chest heaving with pent-up anger. It was possible steam blasted out my ears. Wolf puffed her chest, proud of the stand I’d made.

You okay? Bowen’s voice echoed in my head, startling me enough that I found his eyes across the gym from where he stood on the sidelines. I nodded as heat curled inside me. His eyes roamed over me in a way that sent Wolf skittering happily.

Skylar didn’t miss the way his eyes trailed me either. A very unladylike word dropped out of her mouth but was covered by applause as the dance squad scurried off the floor.

“I’ll show you.” Skylar snarled the words. She took a few jogging steps onto the gymnasium floor, stared daggers at me, then looked to be sure Bowen could see her. He raised an eyebrow and glanced from her to me. I shrugged a shoulder.

Without waiting for more specific attention, Skylar did back handsprings from one end of the gym to the other. The spectators clapped as she did sparkle fingers and ran back to our side.

“You can’t beat me, snitchy.”

“Did you forget I did tumbling and gymnastics most of my childhood?”

Her face paled slightly as her eyes narrowed.
